Biotechnology for a sustainable society

On March 11 and 12, 2010, the 13th Netherlands Biotechnology Congress (NBC-13) will take place in Ede, the Netherlands. This year’s theme is ‘Biotechnology for a sustainable society’. In today's world of pollution, environmental exploitation, global warming and (infectious) diseases, there is a clear need for sustainable production systems, and a more bio-based economy. Biotechnology is one of the ways to make these sustainable production systems. Applications range from the introduction of desirable traits in crops, to the production of bio-fuels and from providing solutions for a clean environment to the conception of novel diagnostic tools to improve plant, animal and human health.

NBC-13 deals with the latest developments in biotechnology that can contribute to a sustainable society. Keynote speakers are Ron Fouchier (Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands), Gjalt Huisman (Codexis Inc., US), Morgante Michelle (University of Udine, Italy), Christine Mummery (University of Leiden, Netherlands), Mario Tredici (University of Florence, Italy) en Willy Verstraete (University of Gent, Belgium).
